RE-PRESS: CD ORIGINALMENTE RILASCIATO NEL 2019.
Questa gradita restampa è celebrare la pubblicazione a gennaio delle tanto attese memorie di Dana, Weren't Born A Man, co-scritto con David Shasha e pubblicato da Hawksmoor Publishing. Dana sarà il più attiva possibile quest'anno (circostanze permettendo) promuovendo sia il libro che questa ri-stampa.
- Dana Gillespie si è fatta un nome per la prima volta come cantante adolescente (e cantautore) negli anni '60, con una serie di singoli e album memorabili per Pye e Decca.
- Nel 1971, ha collaborato con la società di gestione MainMan di David Bowie, unendosi a Bowie alla RCA Records. Sarebbero passati due anni prima del suo prossimo disco, ma valeva la pena aspettare. Werent Born A Man è stato un meraviglioso amalgama di pop, soul e alcuni meravigliosi songwriting di Dana. La traccia del titolo, per esempio, non avrebbe suonato fuori luogo su Dusty In Memphis , mentre la torsione di Dana su Bowie s Andy Warhol (la canzone era stata effettivamente scritta per lei) era unica. Entrambi questi album sono stati pubblicati come singoli.
- Dana rapidamente seguito con un secondo album per RCA, Ain\xb0t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle . Le registrazioni erano più blues in alcuni punti rispetto al suo predecessore, ma ugualmente impressionanti. L'LP è stato promosso da un singolo, Really Love The Man, ma da allora in poi Dana si separò da MainMan prima di costruire un'invidiabile reputazione come cantante blues di qualche fama.
- Rilasciato con il pieno supporto e coinvolgimento dell'artista e MainMan, What Memories We Make è la prima vera retrospettiva delle registrazioni di Dana per MainMan/RCA. Molte tracce di album fanno il loro debutto su CD e sono state affiancate da una serie di rarità e materiale precedentemente non suo.
- Tutti e cinque i brani del leggendario album BOWPROMO del 1971 sono inclusi: questo era un album diffuso da MainMan con rough mix di David Bowie da un lato (realizzato prima di lui firmando con RCA) e Dana Gillespie dall'altro.
- È presente anche la semi-mitica, precedentemente inascoltata demo originale di Andy Warhol con cori di Bowie e il raro singolo Libido (pubblicato su Mooncrest nel 1973), oltre a sessioni della fine del 1974 per quello che sarebbe stato il terzo album di Dana per RCA/MainMan.
- Ospitato in un lussuoso Digipak con lunghe note a maniche di David Wells all'interno di un opuscolo di 24 pagine che vanta anche un imbarazzo per le ricchezze fotografiche, What Memories We Make è un tributo atteso da tempo a un raro talento britannico di canto/canzoni.

Don't be afraid to step outside the box when discovering new music. This Genre is completely new to me. I came across Dana Gillespie completely by chance when she was being promoted on Rudi Dolezal's backstage. She sung the title track 'Backstage' which she co-wrote with Rudi. What a voice! I purchased her album, 'Under my Bed' which I fell in love with so thought I would try this one. I am really glad I did. It's never to late to discover a new artist, the Queen of Blues for the last 35 years. Favourite tracks: 'Really love the man' and 'Goin' Crazy with the Blues.'

内容は、いうことなし。この時代の、ダナのオリジナルアルバムは、未CD化。ベストCDも、知る限りでは、一度しか発売されていなかった。今回は、レア曲も含めて、非常に、充実した内容で満足。ただ、ジャケットが、地味すぎて、彼女の、良さが、伝わってこないのが、残念。オリジナルアルバムの、CD化が、待ち遠しい。

This Dana Gillespie cd Boxset is superd, it took me right back to my youth, in the 1970's, all her albums are great, and at that time, in the 1970's, she wasn't taken seriously as proper musician, she had this affinity with David Bowie, that took away part of credibility, by the press, but Bowie new the talent was there. the cd boxset is worth buying for nostalgia, even if you dont know, her music well.

I purchased this newly released double CD set as a completist Bowie collector. Gillespie was a long term London friend of Bowie, and into the early US era, both of them being signed to Mainman. These recordings are from 1971 to the end of 1974 dur9ng her time with Mainman. Gillespie had a solid career in folk, pop, and stage musicals, which later matured into blues. For the past 18 years she’s been the organiser of the huge Blues Festival on the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique, which runs for 15 days every January, and is a major gig for top blues musicians.Gillespie’s voice in this CD set is strong and full of character which already shows her quality as a blues singer. It's a treat to hear Bowie play backing singer and instrumentalist on two of the tracks. Gillespie also sings a song written for her by Bowie - Andy Warhol. His collaboration (as well as two tracks with Mick Ronson) happened literally just before Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders exploded onto the universe.This is a wonderful slice of Dana Gillespie’s professional history and a delight to listen to. I’m planning to collect more recent examples of her work. The double CD set comes with a 24 page illustrated essay on the time she spent with Mainman, and in context with Bowie’s early US days pre-Ziggy.

Dana Gillespie, Schauspielerin und talentierte Sängerin, der allerdings der ganz große Durchbruch verwehrt blieb. Ihr wohl größter Erfolg war 1983 mit „Move your body close to me“, er hätte aber durchaus auch schon deutlich früher sein können, ihr 1973ziger Album „Weren't born a man“, welches unter Mitwirkung von David Bowie entstand, hatte einige vorzügliche Songs zu bieten. Ebenso das im Jahr drauf veröffentlichte Nachfolgewerk „Ain't gonna play no second fiddle“, auf dem Gillespie's Affinität zum Blues deutlich heraus zu hören ist. Beide damaligen LPs sind auf dieser Doppel-CD enthalten. Obendrauf gibt’s reichlich Bonus- und Demomaterial, wie zum Beispiel „Andy Warhol“, bei dem auch David Bowie zu hören ist.Insgesamt ist diese Doppel-CD ein richtig feines Paket und wird mit einem überzeugenden Booklet abgerundet.
