Pictures are beautiful. I had just returned from visiting Italy and this makes a beautiful coffee table book with many of those most beautiful spots in Venice captured.

Maravillosas imágenes de Venecia desierta. Es una ciudad preciosa siempre, pero da gusto verla (si no fuese por las causas) sin las hordas de turistas que la invaden constantemente.

If, like me, you have ever waited impatiently for tourists to get out of the way so you can take a nicer photo, this is the book for you.

The first time I turned the pages of this book, it made me very, very sad indeed, for all sorts of reasons. Knowing Venice quite well, I find it unimaginable how still and quiet it must have been while these photos were being taken. There is an almost “post-Apocalyptic rapture” quality to them. In most, it’s not just people who are missing, it’s washing hanging out to dry, it’s pigeons, and even litter! These are very, very technically proficient photographs. There must always have been the fear that someone living locally was going to wander into shot. By the time I put the book down, I was wishing someone had. Just occasionally. The views chosen for the book also avoid most of the classic Venice city views, and it is, I think, all the better for that. As a photographer, it’s given me loads of ideas for my next visit, plus an enormous sense of professional jealousy that I will have to be satisfied with waiting for people to get out of shot - knowing that I will almost certainly fail on every occasion!I only have one single gripe. The book would look even better still in a larger, more sumptuous format, which would have saved some wide photos from being spoiled by having detail disappearing into the spine of the binding. But printed and published as it has been makes it very accessible to all of us who are itching to return to La Serenissima.A thoroughly good job, well done, and a unique record.
