I bought a Honda strimmer (actually it's a multi-tool unit, but I only have the strimmer attachment) because I found a lawnmower repair man, on Youtube, talking about small engine reliability and he said that he hardly ever has to fix Honda engines: they just keep on working.This year, mine didn't. It started losing power after about fifteen minutes of running and the problem was growing steadily worse. I changed the fuel lines and filter; put in a new air filter; a new spark plug (which I gapped, as one should); changed the oil and the petrol... it reached the point where it was becoming unusable.By a process of elimination, I decided that the problem must lie in either the fuel pump or the carburetor and envisaged a lot of fiddling work and expensive parts. I thought about getting it fixed by a professional, but then found (1) the fuel pump and carburetor form one integral unit and (2) replacement units are ridiculously cheap.Mine arrived in under 24 hours and I quickly found a video explaining how to swap over the carb. It is mind-bendingly easy: with an 8 mm nut spinner it takes around five minutes to whip the old one off and fit a new one. My little Honda engine now has a new lease of life.I don't blame Honda for the failure. I think it's a combination of the rubbish that they put into petrol these days and my failure to drain the tank before putting the strimmer away. Now that I know how easy and cheap it is to fit a new carb, I think I'll keep going with my bad habits.
