As you can imagine this review is not about the movie but about the 4K version. I bought it because ive seen a couple of people praising it as a 4K release and i can only say im dissapointed. Its a slight improvement over the bluray but also the colors are darker and its not on the same 4k level as for example 2001 or Blade Runner which are incredible experiences in 4K. This is not.Its not a bad experience by any means but i wouldnt use this Oz 4K to showcase your new tv to your friends. Use 2001 and Blade Runner 4K instead. Its a fact this is a much older movie and the 4K restoration is probably the best possible but its not by any measure the incredible 4K home theater experience some reviews claim. So if you still dont own the movie get this, but if you already have it on regular bluray , dont bother with the 4K as you wont be impressed. Even the regular bluray is more colorful. So, recommended but only if you havent bought the movie yet.

The greatest film ever made, bar none. It might not be the intellectual choice, but I've bought this so many times over the years (is it nine or is it ten?) that it would be silly to give the honour to anything else. The new version, rather like the version of It's A Wonderful Life which was issued around the same time, is not so much better, but rather it's different to the previous Blu-ray Ray. The problem, and the unavoidable truth, is that once you put your Blu-ray copy into a good upscaling 4k machine, you have to be sat pretty close to the tv to even notice a difference.Maybe if you have a screen that's got a six foot or more diagonal then you'll welcome the extra pixels, but on my 55 inch set I genuinely don't think I've gained anything. After all, unless I'm very badly informed, don't cinemas screen movies using Blu-ray discs? And you don't hear people walking out complaining that they could have done with a shaper picture. But that's not what all this is about, is it? The 4k revolution, much like the movement from vinyl to CDs, is more to do with the film companies needing an excuse to sell us our favorite films over and over again. And we fall for it every time.So if you don't own a copy of Oz, then why not? And you need to buy one, whether it's this or any other. But if you already have it, then whether you get it depends entirely on whether you have twenty pounds to burn.Either way, it's always going to be a five star review for a five star movie.
