Firstly, just a brief note of caution as it was a factor for why I chose this particular version. There are a few examples of this torch on Amazon - some claim to be 30 lumen, some 40 and some 50. Looking at some of the more expensive versions, there does seem to be a 50 lumen version when you look at the images of the packaging and the one ordered here was advertised as 50 lumen but was actually the standard 40 lumen one. To be honest 40 lumen is the only version shown on the Petzl website and so I am not sure if a higher lumen version actually exists.Having said all that - it is a great little emergency backup head torch. It runs on a CR2032 (included) which claims to have a 10 year shelf life - hinting at it's use as backup rather than a main head torch. The torch itself comes in a nice case which should keep the worst of the weather out and make it easy to store without it getting tangled or damaged. The shock cord head strap works well, and although not as comfortable as the webbing type strap, is perfectly fine for this size of torch and plenty comfortable enough in use. The inclusion of an emergency whistle is also a nice touch.I see this as mainly to be used in the glove box of a car, or stowed in a life jacket or similar to deal with any emergencies that might piop up, but if you are happy to change the little button cell regularly, then it would be equally good as a lightweight head torch for running in low visibility or dark winter evenings.All in all, I would buy one again.

Like many people I was confused by the lumen ratings of the PETZL e+LITE. The Amazon page stated 50 lumen, but what I received was 40 lumen. I Emailed PETZL UK and they said that the original e+LITE was 50 lumen, but that impacted battery life, so they relaunched it at 30 lumen, but reviewers commented on the drop in light output. So PETZL now make the 2023 model at a rating in between the two originals, with 40 lumen output, which they say is a compromise between longer run times and better light output. So if you receive a box like the one in the photo, and the e+LITE is rated at 40 lumens, you have not been duped, you have received the latest 2023 version, with the more efficient main LED. The light itself is obviously meant to be a kind of backup to your backup. It is intended as a last line of defence against pitch black, and for that it works well. In total darkness, even before your night vision kicks in, the lower (20 lumen) output lets you navigate around a room, and the full 40 lumens lets you see everything very easily. If you were backpacking and going ultralight, you could easily pitch a tent in complete darkness with the e+LITE. The red LED is more of a close quarters illuminator, but it would be perfect for switching to after a walk to a campsite toilet block, so you don't wake other people in a tent or caravan. The e+LITE is perfect for ultralight campers, or for just keeping in the car centre console, for that one time you need a headtorch. The red strobe function does not seem very powerful while wearing the headtorch, but if you leave the e+LITE on a surface and walk away from it, both the red and the white strobes are brighter than you might think, although the white strobe is by far the more powerful and will carry the furthest distance. The rather comfortable head strap adjuster also contains a whistle. The e+LITE is rather like the Victorinox Classic SD Pocket Knife I have on my keyring. For most of the time I don't need it. But for the times I do, it is worth it's weight in gold.
