It is always a challenge to identify the ideal guide to pack in your luggage ahead of a trip, however, Lonely Planet guides take some beating. In this particular case, we have visited this region on a number of occasions in the last ten years, with the latest being a walking tour which included visiting all key sites of Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi town as well as the Valley of the Gods. We took optional tours to Vesuvius, Pompeii and Capri and therefore our knowledge of this region is current. So what makes the book a five star book? Firstly it is compact and would fit into a day sack comfortably, yet at the same time it provides sufficient information for those travelling who like information but not to the point that reading the guide is a marathon. Basically it provides sufficient detail for what most travellers would require. I had to smile though that for those engaged on a guided walking tour every guide should carry a health warning that to enter the towns on the coast often requires navigating over 2000 steps from the rough pathways leading to the town. The guide is divided into four main geographic areas for Napoli, the Islands in the bay of Napol, the Amalfi Coast and Salerno as well as providing generic information on money, accommodation etc. Each is well written combined with good images of what to expect. This is further enhanced through the incusion of a decent foldaway map of Napoli.Overall then a good book which will provide all but the most adventurous with sufficient knowledge to enhance any visit to this area.

I've used Lonely Planet guidebooks to plan trips for a long time and have always found them the best for planning trips anywhere in the world, but Lonely Planet seems to have recently decided to stop writing guidebooks because this "guidebook" (just published earlier this week) does not include any practical information. For example, there's literally no useful information about any sights (such as hours of operation, addresses, prices, etc.), nor does the book include anything other than a very brief sentence or two about each sight. There's also no longer any detailed transportation information about each city/town/area covered by the book. Unlike previous editions of Lonely Planet guidebooks, this "guidebook" doesn't even cover all the main cities/towns in the region covered by the book. Everything is now organized by "hubs" - more information is provided about a place that the author has decided is the "hub" for the area, and then a sentence or two is included for 1-2 towns in the vicinity of the "hub", leaving out entire towns, parks, sights, etc. in the region. You can no longer use Lonely Planet guidebooks to get an overview of the different regions in the area covered by the book and a breakdown of each main city/town within the region so that you can figure out which areas to visit. Lonely Planet already had a different type of guidebook that was more of a 'big picture' overview book that had more pictures and themed sections, but they've now decided to apply the same kind of format to their 'comprehensive' classic Lonely Planet guidebooks, rendering them useless. This "guidebook" is more like a picture book with vague suggestions of things to do. It really isn't a guidebook at all and shouldn't be marketed as such. I have no idea why they've decided to ruin a great product but I won't be purchasing any new editions of their "guidebooks".
