This is a pretty flexible digital desktop synthesizer at a very great price. The Blofeld is a very unique synthesizer, with a lot of features not found on typical synthesizers.SOUND QUALITYSound quality without effects (reverb, chorus, etc.) is professional level comparable to an Access Virus TI2 without effects. An Access Virus has a bit better effects however, but costs considerably more than a Blofeld.CONTROLSWhile many more pricey desktop synthesizers have plenty of buttons and knobs, the Blofeld has only a few buttons and knobs. I saw this as a weakness originally, but the interface is very well designed. Most of the critical adjustments are easily made by pressing a single button and then moving the associated parameter value knobs. There are 4 main parameter category buttons that can select 4 different main parameter categories (oscillators, filters, modulation, and effects/arpeggiator). The oscillator button can select oscillator 1, 2, or 3. The filter button can select filter 1 or 2. The modulator button select filter envelope, amp envelope, LFO, and matrix categories. You can tell which category you're in by an LED that lights up indicating which category is currently selected. The values that each of the 4 knobs on the right can adjust is written directly above each knob in a grid on the right of the category LEDs, making it easy to know exactly what you're adjusting with one of the 4 knobs. It's a pretty nice layout. The parameter you're adjusting is also displayed on the LCD screen. There's a 5th category button called play, which allows you to select which part you're currently playing or modifying. This play button is near the LCD screen. On the left of the LCD screen there's also another parameter category rotary knob that controls which page of a parameter category you're editing on the screen. The LCD screen has 2 devoted parameter modification knobs below it. Their parameter name is displayed above them on the LCD screen. It's a fairly consistent interface. You have a category knob, and 5 category buttons, and parameter adjustment 6 knobs that work on whatever is the current selected category. It's easy to learn. You don't need to look at the manual to figure it out.FIRMWARE UPDATE 1.25 IS NEEDED!When I received my Blofeld, it had OS version 1.24 on it, which has a bug where the mix knob would periodically stop working. This was fixed by upgrading the Blofeld to 1.25. If you purchase the Blofeld, and you don't have 1.25 on it, make sure to update to 1.25.OPTIONAL SAMPLE PLAYBACK FEATURE (SL LICENSE)The optional purchasable SL License feature allows you to load full stereo sound samples for use as oscillator sources allowing full chromatic stereo polyphonic multi-sample playback. This is a feature not found on many synthesizers. Not even the Access Virus TI2 has this feature! The keyboard version comes with the SL License pre-installed. But if you want it for the desktop version, it's an additional purchase.I purchased the SL License to open up this fantastic feature. I have used it to load a fairly realistic stereo piano multi-sample into the Blofeld, which I can modulate, filter, etc., just as if it's using normal oscillators! Very cool indeed. The samples load as mono only, but to get stereo, you load the left audio multi-sample into oscillator 1, and the right audio multi-sample into oscillator 2, and then you pan the oscillators so that oscillator 1 is left and oscillator 2 is right. That gives you a full stereo sample. Quite nice.To load multi-samples into the Blofeld, you use the free SPECTRE software from Waldorf. It has direct support for WAV, KMP, and WMP files.I have been able to load many of my old multi-sample soundfonts I have into the Blofeld. Unfortunately, it doesn't directly support soundfonts. I use Polyphone (a free soundfont editor) to export soundfonts into SFZ format (make sure to split stereo samples into L/R samples if you want stereo) which has all the soundfont's original sample WAV files extracted into a subfolder. Then I can load the WAV files from that SFZ subfolder directly into Blofeld's SPECTRE software to send to the Blofeld over USB.SUMMARYThis is a feature rich synthesizer. Don't let it's simple control panel fool you. It is packed with tons of features not found in other synthesizers twice the price. It's well worth the money.UPDATE: I've used it extensively for 8 years now. Still works great. All the controlls are still smooth. Not a single problem. Love it. Make sure you have the latest update. It fixed all the issues.I really love the knob grid system it uses. Imagine how giant this synth would be if it didn't use a knob grid system. The 10 point grid system gives you essetially 40 knobs from the 4 actual knobs in the grid and is very easy to use. That and the 4 other knobs gives you essentially 44 knobs. This grid system greatly reduces the size of the synth. I have limited space and this size is perfect. If I need to change a setting live while playing that's not easy to access via the grid, I just map a knob on my keyboard to that function. I rarely need this though. They did a good job making the most needed knob functions easily accessable via the grid.

First impressions of the Waldorf Blofeld are extremely good. Upon unboxing I was impressed by the surprisingly hefty all metal chassis and feel of the stainless steel rotary encoders. 5/5 for build quality; it's superb.I've worked my way through the presets and they give a good demonstration of what this little synthesiser is capable of. There are some nice leads and pads and some great FX. I was particularly impressed with the DSC3 Bubbles and wonderfully knowing Flying Teapot. If you're a fan of Gong and the fantastic Tim Blake then you're in for a treat.Where the Blofeld shines is in it's modulation possibilities. It's an incredibly deep synthesiser in terms of its sonic palette. All those wavetables offer an endless supply of sounds and you can tweak from now until your deathbed and you'll still come up with new sounds. There are nice sounding filters, including comb filters which I particularly like. A complex modulation matrix with lots of sources and destinations means some crazy patches can be created along with lush, evolving ambient pads.If you want to create analog sounding tones with a crisp digital edge and be able to tweak until your brain hurts then the Blofeld is perfect. At a little over 300 quid and with the Waldorf Edition software synths thrown in too then this is a bargain. Awesome little machine!
