When you read the technical descriptions of how to hold the trumpet, Arban notes that some people play it out of the side of their mouth and some out of the front. The descriptions as he provides them are insufficient to produce a tone or get the mouthpiece to buzz.With the help of Charlie Porter’s free guide on YouTube I was able to get a good buzz after two days (as in the third day) and after a week with just buzzing with the mouthpiece, I was able to get multiple tones. Now I need an actual trumpet to progress further.Arban also explains wrongly that you need to press the trumpet harder against the lips for the higher registers, which seems to be an explanation Charlie Porter also suffered, considering the calluses on his lips. For the higher registers you really only want to blow ever so slightly more toward your nose, too much so and the air will escape on the sides of your mouthpiece. Blowing upward slightly produces a smaller aperture of the lips and as such the highest tones, without excess pressure and while remaining musically inclined.Arban doesn’t get it and just put a load of notes on paper, forcing people to drill uncreatively as if we are army folk that shouldn’t even remotely consider to think for themselves. This is the kind of book that uncreative players would hail as a great book, because it simply tells them what to play and then they can play it, provided someone else explains the techniques to them properly at some point.It doesn’t get you to think about motivations and how this translates to sound. It’s an absolutely horrendous oppressive piece of literature that should have been locked in a vault so no one can read it a long time ago. It deserves no recommendation whatsoever.

アーバンの教則本は日本において全音出版から「アーバン教則本1,2,3」もしくは「ISE アーバン教則本」が販売(前者は発売終了)されている。日本では3冊に分けられる教本だが、この版では1冊にまとめてある。持ち運びには非常に便利だ。しかし、利点はそこだけに留まらない。全音出版のものとは違う版(アーバン自身の)で構成されていて、誤っている指使いや省略された装飾記号がそのまま載っている。これは真にこの教本を欲する人にとって重要なことである。レイアウトこそ少々変わるもの、文句の無いトランペットのための王道の完成された教本といえよう。
