Excellent quality strings, made in Italy.

My guitar used to have normal strings, but I replaced them with Nylgut strings. This was a great idea as the Nylgut strings sound really nice and not buzzy like the old ones. Also good, because they mean that you don't have to disembowel your cat to replace the strings on your guitar, so saves on quite a bit of mess in that respect. Obviously vegan friendly too.On a serious note, these are high quality strings with a really nice tone, a bit different to the standard nylon sound, a bit brighter and good finger-feel. Would highly recommend.

These Nylgut strings are made to emulate the gut and silk and silver strings of the early 19th century. Tonally, they do this very well (I have used gut and silk, so I know what they sound like) and last far longer. The trebles have a slightly 'smoother' tone than plain gut, but they are of a similar density, so the diameters are very close to what would be used for plain gut, at a similar tension. The basses are silver-plated copper wire wound on a Nylgut floss. This floss has greater tensile strength than natural silk floss, but Aquila seem to have tried to even out the proportions of floss to metal, in order to achieve some of the 'vocal' quality, more fundamental oriented tone of silk strings, while ensuring the 4th string has a good life span. They are not exactly like wound on silk basses tonally, but much closer than modern nylon floss strings. I use them at the recommended pitch standard of a=430hz rather than modern concert pitch, and they give of their best at this. I would say that the guitar scale length should be no longer than 63 to 64cm, which is what most early romantic guitars are. The plain strings stretch a lot at first, and constant tuning is needed, but they soon settle down, and then hold their tuning well. A specialist set yes, but much better suited both in tone and tension for original instruments, and accurate replicas. I use right hand fingertips only (no nail) and the strings are a delight to play on.
